The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street: Fear and suspicion are destructive
One major theme of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" is " Fear and suspicion are destructive. charlie shoots Pete and everyone blames him for being the alien even though everyone was already scared. This supports the theme because they blamed charlie for the killing Pete even though he didn't know it was Pete and nobody ask the person if he was Pete because of this they blamed charlie looking for a escape goat. Charlie Blames Tommy for being the alien because he predicted what would happen even though he's 14. Charlie blamed him looking for a escape goat. Finally they all blame each other even blaming kids so they wouldn't get blamed by others looking for an escape goat.
"But...but I didn't know who he was. I certainly didn't know who he was."
"You killed him,Charlie. You shot him dead!"
"Pete Van Horn! He was just gonna go over to the next block to see if the power was on-"
"Who is it,Charlie tell us!"
"All right,Charlie ,let's hear it!"
"Come on,Charlie,come on."
"I know who it is that doesn't belong . I swear to you I know."
"It's...it's the kid.It's Tommy He's the one."
"Charlie has to be the one- Where's my rifle-"
"But it was the kid here who knew what was going to happen all the time. He was the one who knew"
