  • 1. Navigation Acts
  • Britain: We decide where your ships are going and what they're shipping!
  • Colonists: That's not fair though!
  • 2. Stamp Act
  • We need someway to repay our debt!
  • Stamp Act
  • But you can't just tax us without our consent!
  • 3. Quartering Act
  • Why are you even here? A standing army is so unnecessary during peacetime.
  • Orders from the King. You have to let us stay.
  • The Navigation Acts were a series of laws passed by the British Parliament to regulate and control English ships, shipping, and commerce with other countries. This was important because many colonists were angry by the fact that these laws benefitted Britain by the method of mercantilism but limited the colonies' economic potential.
  • 4. Boston Massacre
  • Boo! You're not trying to protect us, you're trying to control us!
  • The Stamp Act was a law that imposed taxes on legal documents, wills, playing cards, and other paper products to help pay off Britain's debt. This Act was important because it caused many colonists to reconsider their relationship with Britain. It was also one of the colonies' first time being rebellious and defiant towards Britain.
  • 5. Coercive Acts/Intolerable Acts
  • Coercive/Intolerable Acts
  • The Quartering Act was a law that required colonists to provide housing, food, and shelter for British soldiers. This Act was important because it caused many colonists to fear the standing army, whom they thought were there not to protect them, but to control them. Like the Stamp Act, the Quartering Act also made many colonists rethink their loyalty to Britain.
  • 6. 2nd Continental Congress
  • The Boston Massacre was a conflict between the British soldiers and the colonists. The British soldiers opened fire on a crowd and shot and killed five colonists as a result of the colonists' harassment towards the soldiers. This was important because of the famous illustration by Paul Revere, which was used as propaganda during the Revolutionary War era. This illustration made many more colonists sympathize with the colonies and turn against the King, promoting the fight for independence.
  • Well you don't have to harass us! Step back or we'll shoot!
  • The Coercive/Intolerable Acts were a series of laws passed to punish the colonists and the Sons of Liberty for the Boston Tea Party. These laws closed the Boston Harbor, worsened the Quartering Act, and took away representative government in the colonies. This was very important because it was the tipping point for many colonists.
  • How dare you waste all our tea!! This is a punishment to control you more!
  • All we wanted was to get a point across! If you can't give us more freedom, we're leaving!
  • The 2nd Continental Congress was the second meeting with the delegates of the Thirteen Colonies. This meeting was extremely important because it created a plan of action for the Revolutionary War and formed the Continental Army.
  • Who's going to lead our Continental Army?
  • I will...and for free!
