- David meets a girl named Sophie while off playing in a sand dune. He hears a voice as he was preparing for his fourth descent from the sand gully.

- As they slide in the sand, Sophie injures her foot. Her left foot was jammed in a narrow space between two up-pointed stones. David scrabbled the soft sand clear with his hands, trying to help her.

- David tries to get Sophie to take her shoe off to get her loose, but she insists that she mustn't take them off. After David tells her that there is no other option, he is surprised when he looks down and sees her unusual number of toes.

- Any creature that shall seem to be human, but is not formed thus is not human. It is neither man nor woman. It is a blasphemy against the true image of God, and hateful in the sight of God.
- David helps Sophie walk home, while she guided him. David and Sophie arrive and he meets Sophie's mother, Mrs.Wender, a tall woman, with a handsome face, large bright eyes, wearing a russet dress.
- Yes, I'm sorry mummy. I tried hard, but I couldn't do it myself, and it did hurt so.
- After Mrs.Wender bandaged Sophie, she looked at David seriously and told him to keep a secret. No one can know about Sophie's six toes because if anyone were to find out, they'd be terribly unkind to her.
- As David was walking back home, The Definition of Man recited itself in his head. He came to realize that Sophie was in great danger.
