  • 'It didn’t take me long to make up my mind that these liars warn’t no kings nor dukes at all, but just low-down humbugs and frauds. But I never said nothing, never let on; kept it to myself; it’s the best way; then you don’t have no quarrels, and don’t get into no trouble'.

  • 'Then he showed us another little job he’d printed and hadn’t charged for, because it was for us. It had a picture of a runaway n***** with a bundle on a stick over his shoulder, and ‘$200 reward’ under it. The reading was all about Jim, and just described him to a dot.'

  • [Boggs] cussed away with all his might, and throwed his hat down in the mud and rode over it, and pretty soon away he went a-raging down the street again, with his gray hair a-flying. Everybody that could get a chance at him tried their best to coax him off of his horse so they could lock him up and get him sober; but it warn’t no use — up the street he would tear again, and give Sherburn another cussing.
  • Huck and Jim continue down the river. On one of his solo expeditions in the canoe, Huck comes upon two men on shore fleeing some trouble and begging to be let onto the raft trying to fool them.
  • 'The pitifulest thing out is a mob; that’s what an army is—a mob; they don’t fight with courage that’s born in them, but with courage that’s borrowed from their mass, and from their officers. But a mob without any man at the head of it, is beneath pitifulness.'
  • Duke and the King ask about Jim being a runaway slave. Huck makes up a story about how he was orphaned and tells them that he and Jim have been forced to travel at night since so many people stopped his boat to ask whether Jim was a runaway. That night, the duke and the dauphin take Huck’s and Jim’s beds while Huck and Jim stand watch against a storm.

  • Waking up after a night of drinking, the duke and dauphin practice the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet and the swordfight from Richard III on the raft. Huck witnesses the shooting of a rowdy drunk by a man, Sherburn, whom the drunk has insulted.
  • Bye! I'll be back with a doctor.
  • The lynch mob charges to Sherburn’s house, and knocks down the front fence. Sherburn greets them from the roof of his front porch, rifle in hand. Sherburn delivers a haughty speech on human nature in which he attacks the cowardice and mob mentality of the average person. Sherburn tells the crowd that no one will lynch him in the daytime. The mob, chastened, disperses.
  • Huck, Tom, and Jim run to their canoe and go downstream to an island where their raft is. They are all happy that they escaped, especially Tom who had a bullet in his leg. Huck and Jim are worried about Tom and Jim suggests that they should get a doctor.
  • Huck leaves Jim and Tom on the island, while he goes to find a doctor. Huck finds a doctor and brings him back to the island to treat Tom.
