  • Once upon a time not too long ago a tale of three peculiar individuals lay unraveled in the brick and marble of a mystical city.
  • Alexander Ferenc 5A
  • A young man named Jean has struggled all his life until it took this fateful course.
  •
  • Jean has never been rich with money or ever have anyone care for him as both his parents left when he was only 3.
  •
  • Despite this Jean was always rich at heart and was sure to care for others even though no one ever reciprocated such feelings and actions towards him.
  • One night John had wondered about all that he has done to help others and how disliked he was because of it. He knew this was strange so he thought that if he had left his home town for a city far away he'd meet a kinder more receptive people.
  • Just three days before Jean's birthday he ran off, beginning his journey to whichever city he would find first.
  • Upon his arrival Jean was in awe at the large churches and cathedrals, bustling markets, and homes detailed to an overindulgence.
  • Although this was not all he was in awe at.
  •
  • Jean had fallen in love with a very rich but still very kind noblewoman by the name of Annette.
  •
  • Jean thought about Annette often but would always become upset after realizing she'd probably never talk to him because of his poverty.
  • =
  • Jean worked long and hard to make just enough money to even live in the same part of this mysterious new city as Annette and just barely got by.
  •
  • Though Jean had quietly been in love with Annette he never initiated even a simple conversation with her for fear of rejection.
  • Another man by the name of Luc who was also in love with Annette was attempting to win her over much like Jean. This man didn't have the allure that Jean did to Annette but he talked much more to her than Jean ever did.
  • Only rumors of who Luc really is ever provided any information about him. What was known for sure was that he is very rich and very handsome, and was very powerful in using dark magic. So powerful that is believed he turned a man who was about to marry a girl Luc was enamored with into a frog. Underneath the fancy clothing and lavish lifestyle, Luc is a horrible man.
  •
  • The day Jean finally decided to talk to Annette and Luc had insulted him. Jean was distressed by the comment but undeterred in a fit of love for Annette to be so easily dispatched.
  •
  • Don't you know? Pretty girls don't marry men living off pennies.
  • Seeing such a reaction upset Luc gravely. He knew Annette was a very compassionate girl but had expected her to laugh at his comment feeling that he was on terms with her that allowed for a mutual enjoyment in each other's jokes, no matter how out of line.
  •
  • Feeling betrayed and that his efforts were in vain, Luc vanished near immediately after his shortfall.
  •
  • Though Jean struggles to fully describe his feelings for Annette, she ultimately understands. Before leaving Jean tells her to meet him at the town square just outside a parliament building.
  •
  • Little did the two know that in their time of making arrangements, something sinister had been unraveling.
  • When the clock strikes three Jean will be as hideous as the unwanted potatoes in the markets.
  • Jean had woken up and prepared for his meeting with Annette when just before leaving his home he noticed something in the mirror.
  •
  • After the moments of initial panic washed over him Jean had finally pieced together that he had become horrifically disfigured.
  •
  • In disbelief thinking his mirror to be broken, Jean runs outside and looks for others to verify his appearance. He finds no one.
  • Because of this he runs to a river just outside the city and looks at the gleams of reflection coming off the water.
  • He finally verifies that he looks just as his mirror had displayed him to be. At the realization of the implications Jean begins to cry.
  • As he continues to cry a frog hops up to him.
  • Hello!
  • Jean begins to stop his crying, at this reassurance.
  • I know Luc sent you and I know he did all this.
  • I am no emissary for Luc, in fact much like you I am a victim.
  • Long ago Luc and I were infatuated with the same girl. We had already made plans to move to America and get married there. Unfortunately, before I was able to get on the boat I was turned into a frog and thrown into this same river. After some time I began asking around about Luc and his curses. I found out that the only way the curses Luc casts were to be relieved was getting kissed three times by your destined lover. Because my soon-to-be wife moved before I ever got to be kissed by her I remained a frog for all these years. With destined lovers, it's not the wealth of appearance or the wealth of finances that matter but the wealth of personality and character that do. Jean, if you don't get kissed three times by Annette you will never be relieved of his condition.
  • How do you know about Annette!?
  • After receiving such valuable information Jean jumped up and began to run to the parliament building where Annette was supposed to meet him.
  • As Annette waits patiently for Jean to arrive Luc notices her from across the town square.
  • He begins to make his way over until...
  • Jean runs around the corner.
  • Jean swiftly explains what happened but stops after realizing Luc is only feet away. Annette, though not wholly informed understands enough.
  • I love you.
  • Just as the third kiss concluded, Luc arrives but promptly dissolves into a seemingly endless stream of gold coins. Jean's curse had finally been resolved and his appearance had returned.
  • A week later and Jean and Annette got married.
  • Jean had also gotten the frog a boat ticket to America.
  • Much like the many couples today made up of people beautiful on the inside. Jean and Annette lived happily ever after.
