Stella was talking to peg and she asked Stella if she had a story and Stella responded,” I don't have a story. I mean, nothing that's Interesting”(Bennet 257). With her saying she doesn't have a story is Stella not being able to live fully, she closes off apart of herself for the comfort of passing for white, and so she will never rest easy because her being found out is at constant jeopardy.
Stella was having lunch with Kennedy when the topic of her quitting came about, “Quitting school to become an actor!(“Bennet 252-253).Kennedy is the rebellious type and what do the opposite of what her mother wants her to do so if her mom wants her to go to school she wont, don't do drugs she become an alcoholic, doesn't want to do anything with her black side, has a black boyfriend ect….
Stella scene kennedy playing with the walkers child and was is explaining to Keneedy why she cant play with them,”Because we dont play with niggers”(Bennet 186). This shapes Kennedy's character for later years referring to black people as dark ones and she feels about black people with how Stella imprinted those ideals into her from her own insecurities.
