- This is the rising action where we see how Maddie has gotten involved in murders.
- Theme
- Rick Kayne breaks into Maddie's house and tries to kill her. Luckily officer Faraday was able to save Maddie and kill Rick Kayne
- Maddie's mom is back living with her and Faraday and his son are living next to Maddie and her mom. Stubby is out of jail and Maddie's mom got through rehab.
- The theme of When by Victoria Laurie is loyalty. In the story, Maddie is always loyal to her friends and family, when her mother is constantly drunk Maddie always stays with her. Maddie's uncle stayed loyal to her and continued to defend her even when it looked like there was no hope of being found innocent.
