- Despite Lonnie Goudeau constantly bullying Jude because of the color of her skin, she still has an interest in this young Mallard boy. The attention he gives her blinds her from the torment he inflicts on her every day, "A beautiful boy. So she prickled when she imagined him staring at her, rolling up his sleeves, his forearms so light you could see the brown hair, and flexing, the pinched paper between his fingers" (Bennett 84). Jude still thinks fondly of Lonnie because nobody else in the town will give her that attention.

- After moving to Mallard, Jude was always made fun of for being the darkest girl there. In an attempt to become lighter she reached out to her grandmother, Adele, for help," A jar of cream. That was all she needed. She'd slather it on her skin, and by fall, she would return to school, lighter and new" (Bennett 106). Jude took the initiative to ask her grandma for creams and other remedies to lighten her skin because she was not happy with how she looked.
- After spending majority of her childhood in Mallard, Jude has been conditioned to feel self hate. She couldn't believe Reese could like someone like her, "Stop what? he said. "Looking at me like that". "But I like looking at you". "Why?". Jude constantly says things that gives doubt to her beauty. Mallard ruined her self-esteem .
