  • Nice to see you again Mr.Rutherford. I see that you have come to tell me about your experiment that was shown in the newspaper the other day.

  • Yes, my gold foil experiment was a complete success. I was able to discover that the atom has a nucleus that is very small. The nucleus contains positive protons, neutrons and most of the mass. The electrons orbit the nucleus and the mass of an electron is small compared to a proton.

  • So you see, electrons move around the nucleus in orbits of fixed sizes and energies. Electron energy is quantised meaning that the first shell can only contain up to 2 electrons, while the second and third shells can only contain up to 8 electrons.

  • I heard from your students that your revision for the atomic theory stated that electrons are located in defined shells located certain distances from the nucleus. I really found that mindblowing.

I also told them many other things such as how electrons cannot exist between defined shells and are restricted to specific shells; how electrons gain energy by moving to a higher shell and lose energy by moving to a lower shell; and how electrons are more stable when they are closer to the nucleus

  • It seems impossible to know the exact locations of the electrons so instead there should be clouds of probability called orbitals in which we are more likely to find a electrons. Maybe this would t suit more complicated atoms and molecules of different elements.
  • The one negative aspect about Bohr's Atomic Model and revision to the Atomic Theory was that his Model did not work well for heavier atoms.

  • By 1919, Bohr was moving away from the idea that electrons orbited the nucleus and developed short ideas to describe them instead. He focused more on solving the rare-earth element problem that made certain elements so similar. Specifically, Bohr was able to declare that the undiscovered element 72 was not a rare-earth element.
