  • Information Literacy: the ability to find information, evaluate its credibility, and use it effectively.
  • Ok class, today I'll be showing you the correct way of finding information on the internet.
  • You need to be able to:- recognize advertisements,- search the Internet effectively - jugde source legitimacy - identify misinformation
  • 1. Recognizing Advertisements: You should be able to identify advertisements and understand that they are NOT credible. When you see 'Ad' written next to a website in green, that means the website owners paid to have their website come up first. 2. Searching the Internet effectively: You need to search specifically to find the correct answers. Some suggestions are:- Using keywords (shortening down sentences to the most relevant words)- Using quotation marks to search for exact phrases - Using the (+) and (-) signs to specify exactly what you want and don't want* (keep in mind (+)= with, (-)= without)*don't include spaces between the words and signs (example: shampoo -honey)
  • 3. Judging Source Legitimacy:Judge whether sources are credible or not by checking the following:- Is an author mentioned? If so, check their credentials.- Was this published recently? Don't forget that information can change over time!- Are scholarly sources cited? Do you know of them? - Does the URL include a .edu or .gov? Those are credible!- Is the website well-designed? Does it look professional?- Does the website follow grammar and spelling rules? 4. Identifying Misinformation:Determine whether the information seems accurate by determining:1. Does the author seem biased? If so, there is a chance the information is inaccurate because there is a motive. 2. Scroll down to the used sources. Do you know of them? Do they seem credible? (judge source legitimacy)3. If you were to look at other credible websites, could you find the same information there as the website you wanted to use?
  • Search specifically for correct answers! Everything on the Internet is true= misconception USE COMMON SENSE!
