  • Led by the Te Rarawa leader Whina Cooper, on the 14th September 1975 - 50 marches left Te Hapua (in the far North) for a long 1000 km march to Wellington.
  • The group of marches called the (Hikoi) quickly grew from 50 marches to plenty more as they approached towns, the locals wanted to offer for their support so they joined the Hikoi.
  • The Hikoi stopped overnight at different Maraes around the country where Whina Cooper educated people on the purpose of the march.
  • About half way to Wellington public interest started to increase more and more, everyone was interested and very curios about the crazy 1000 walk there doing.
  • 13 of October 1975 The hikoi arrived at their final destination, Wellington and formed a mile-long march down the Ngauranga Gorge which created huge media attention. This march was so long that it caused commuter chaos and caused cars to come to a stand still near the central city.
  • Finally, on the 13th October 1975, with a petition signed by 60,000 people, Whina Cooper presents the petition to the Prime Minister (bill Rowling) in Parliament.
