This is my parents when they came to the U.S.A. with my sister from Mexico. They came to the United States to escape political turmoil in Mexico based on elections and poor economic status. My sister was barely 2 years old. They didnt know how they were going to provide a sustainable life for her, or for themselves.
I don't know how we are going to be able to do this.

This is my mother with me after I was born, which was a couple of years after my family came to the U.S.A. I was born and raised in Houston, Texas, under a traditionally Mexican household.

One day, my family and I were watching the news and we saw a news story about people that had migrated and gotten away from their families so they could have a better life. After this, I saw a report on how important immigrants were to society, both to communities and economies. I saw how that person, even if they weren't born there, adapted to their culture and blended them both. I remember telling my parents I had often felt very out of place, but they told me there was no right or wrong. This experience fully changed my perspective, and I knew now I could be both Mexican and American and how I did not have to force myself into either one or the other, but I could be proud of both and practice them equally.
I'm proud to share both nationalities, and I'm glad I am able to express myself freely.
