  • Terry Fox notices sharp pain in knee while playing basketball at his school (Simon Fraser University) in December 1976. He believes it is a cartilage issue and doesn't think it is anything too serious.
  • On March 4th, 1977 Terry gets diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma, a knee cancer that can easily spread to surrounding muscles and tendons. The doctor recommends he has his leg amputated and replaced with a prosthetic designed for walking.
  • The day of the amputation was on March 9th, 1977 where Terry's leg was amputated 15cm above the knee. The night before the surgery, his high school coach gives him a magazine article about a famous amputee (Dick Traum) who ran the New York City Marathon.
  • During his hospital visit, he had seen so many children with cancer and was determined to help. He was motivated by the article his coach gave to him and decided to make a change. He started to train running around the cinder track at a local junior high school and by early 1979, he could run half a mile. His prosthetic doctor, Ben Speicher modified his prosthetics so he could run better.
  • Terry Fox begins his marathon of hope on April 12 1980, to raise money for cancer research. He began his race in St. John's Newfoundland by dipping his prosthetic leg into the cold Atlantic Ocean. He would run an average of 45km per day, while his brother (Darrell Fox) and best friend (Doug Alward) drove in a van collecting donations. Although it was a hard run, people were very supportive and nice throughout it.
  • On September 1st, 1980, Terry was forced to stop his run of 5373 km, in Thunder Bay Ontario after cancer had returned to his lungs. On September 7th, 1980, Terry was featured on a CTV telethon which raised 6.5 million dollars in 5 hours. He was also awarded Companion of the Order of Canada. After the run, Terry raised 24.2 million dollars. Sadly, on June 28, 1981 after contracting pneumonia and going into a coma.
