- My name is Carlos Gergorio Hernandez Vasquez. This is my family. In my Country, we have a shortage of water that causes problems with crop production.

- When I turned 16, I left home by boat to support my eight siblings and meet my mom and dad in the United States
- Unfortunately, my time in the United States was caught short when everyone on the boat was forced off and taken to a detention center
- I didn't feel good so when I was taken to the detention center in Texas, the nurse checked me and diagnosed me with the flu. She said that if it got worse, I would be taken to the hospital. My condition was already bad. My mother would always say "a mal tiempo buena cara". It means "At bad times, have a good face", but I couldn't in so much pain.
- As I tried to walk to the bathroom in my cell, I couldn't even walk straight. I placed my hands on my mouth to stop myself from gagging, I saw there was a puddle of blood falling in my hands. I thanked God for my family, happiness in Texas, enough sources to stay as a family full of love, peace, and happiness. Before I fell to the floor, I smiled because I wanted to show my mother that I had a buena cara during the mal tiempo. I died becoming one of the 214 people who died while detained in U.S immigration centers.
