- Hey Wright, I know last week we had a *tiny* argument about the answer to the question of "What is Love?" but maybe... maybe we could try to have another conversation about it?
- Ugh, fine. I'll go first then. Like I *already* said last time, love is nothing more than a byproduct of natural selection! It's purpose (like every other emotion we have) is to increase the proliferation of our genes.
- But doesn't that imply that love can be boiled down to being a sexual desire? This is starting to sound like it has a Freudian influence... My definition of love as an arresting awareness of rational will extends love to a wide range of instances. How does evolutionary psychology explain love outside of purely romantic love?
- Just because love has the purpose of increasing the proliferation of our genes doesn't mean that it's limited to relationships where your genes are directly passed down! Love for family members (kin selection) and love for non-kin (reciprocal altruism) can also increase the chances of passing down your genes!
