- Justice Wargrave , a retired judge reads a newspaper on a first-class train and starts thinking about his destination : Soldier Island. He remembers the gossip that an American millionaire lived there but it was then bought by Mr. Owen . This started many rumors that it had actually been bought by a movie star or a Lord. He then takes out a letter which is the invitation to the island sent to him by Constance Culmington . Wargrave believes that all this gossip is typical of someone like Constance.
- Vera Claythorne is riding the same train but in third class , she looks over to a letter from Una Nancy Owen asking Vera to come to Soldier Island as a secretary. Vera remembers all the gossip about the island and gets excited about it. Details about her past come back to Vera’s mind , how nice Mrs. Hamilton was to her , she remembers lying by Hugo beside the sea , but then quickly tries to put him out of her mind .
