- M. Loisel gets an invitation to a ball and thinks Mme. Loisel will be excited but she starts crying and says she has nothing to wear so M. Loisel uses the 400 Francs he was saving to buy a rifle to buy her a new dress.

- Just then Mme. Loisel realized she doesn't have any jewelry to wear to the ball. M. Loisel suggest she ask her friend Mme. Forestier because she is a jeweler
- Mme. Loisel ask her friend Mme. Forestier if she can borrow a piece of jewelry and Mme. Forestier lets her pick one and eventually Mme. Loisel come to this one
- Mme. Loisel goes to the ball while M. Loisel waits in the waiting room. Mme. Loisel loves all the attention she gets from other people. M. Loisel has work at 10 A.M. and Mme. Loisel stays at the ball until 4 A.M.
- When they get home, even though Mme. Loisel had a great night, she starts crying because she misses all the attention she was getting. Then she finds out that she lost the necklace so M. Loisel goes out tracing their steps looking for the necklace while she sits and cried. They had to buy a new necklace that was 36,000 Francs to return to her friend and they were in debt for 10 years.
- 10 years later, after they pay the necklace off, Mme. Loisel sees Mme. Forestier and blames the fact that she lost the necklace and was in debt for 10 years was all her fault.
