- Odysseus sails to the Underworld with his crew to find the prophet Tiresias.
- Odysseus promises to slaughter a heifer for the dead and a black lamb for Tiresias.
- Odysseus meets his friend, Elpenor, who explains his death and his final wish.
- "Odysseus and his crew set out of the land of the dead...find the place to which Circe has directed them" (Fitzgerald, 388).
- Odysseus converses with Tiresias. The prophet tells him of many misfortunes that lay ahead for Odysseus.
- " 'Then I addressed the blurred and breathless dead, vowing to slaughter my best heifer for them...' as for Tiresias, I swore to sacrifice a black lamb...I pledged these rites, then slashed the lamb and ewe, letting their blood stream into the wellpit" (11, 1-9).
- Odysseus sees his dead mother, Anticlea.He is dismayed because the last time he saw her, before he left for war, she was alive.
- "One shade came first-Elpenor...'Do not abandon me unwept, unburied, to tempt the gods' wrath, while you sail for home' " (Fitzgerald, 389).
- With heavy hearts, Odysseus and his crew sailed off.
- " 'But anguish lies ahead; the god who thunders on the land prepares it...if you raid the beeves, I see destruction for shp and crew. Though you survive alone...' " (11, 79-92).
- "Odysseus speaks to the shade of his mother. She tells him that Penelope and Telemachus are still grieving for him and that his father, Laertes, has moved to the country, where he, too, mourns his son" (Fitzgerald, 391).
- "Filled with horror, Odysseus and his crew set sail" (Fitzgerald, 391).
