Because of the difference in their age and/or generation, they have different personalities and beliefs. It was mentioned that Flora was the old-fashioned one, and Ellie was the modern and wild one. Also, Ellie became pregnant before marriage so they had to rush to get married.An example of this theme in the modern age is that old people and the youth today have different opinions about certain topics such as pre-marital sex and the like. Old people were usually conservative during their time, but the youth today are more outgoing and "wilder."
- It was mentioned that Robert and Flora were once a couple, but Robert had made Ellie pregnant so they were rushed to have a wedding that was really not planned. There was a sense of betrayal for Flora because Robert was his man before everything that has happened, and it's possible that there is still a sense of anger, grudge, and sadness within her. It's hard being betrayed by your loved ones.An example of this theme in the modern age is the scenarios that we see in telenovelas. Many people relate to watching scenes like these because it really happens in real life that the one you loved becomes the lover of your relative or friend. This is really possible to happen.
- After some time, Ellie had miscarriages and was diagnosed with cancer later on. Being the sister that she is, even though she had some bad feelings about Ellie, Flora still took care of Ellie as much as she could before she hired a nurse. The narrator questioned Flora's motive, posing the possibility that Flora was acting out of a sense of duty or pity. She hypothesizes that Flora subjected herself to a life of service to make some sense of the chaos and injustice of the world. But it is also possible that she just cares about her sister and that family always comes first.An example of this in the modern age is when we have a feud with our family and a tragedy happens. Even though we are angry with each other, we will still choose to help one another because who else could we ask for help first other than our own family.
