نص القصة المصورة

  • A math protégé squirrel sits on top of a 14ft tree.
  • Ugh! I'm bored
  • The math squirrel then spies a nut lying on the ground, some distance away.
  • A NUT!
  • After careful measurements, the math squirrel is able to determine that the nut is 74 degrees from the base of this tree.
  • It's 74°
  • The squirrel then develops a thought.
  • I wonder how far the nut is from the base of this tree? And how far am I from the nut?
  • 14 ft
  • 74°
  • II'LL USE SOHCAHTOA AKA SINE, COSINE, AND TANGENT. THE THREE BIG BAD TRIG RATIOS FOR MY PROBLEM.
  • The squirrel knows he must use SOHCAHTOA to solve these problems. The squirrel needs to use SOHCAHTOA because these three trigonometric ratios are used to find the unknown side lengths of right angle triangles. Judging from this picture and where the nut, tree and squirrel is placed it appears to look like a right angle triangle, with two missing sides, hence why SOHCAHTOA is needed.
  • Time to get solving!
  • For this problem we need to find our two unknowns of this right angle. In this case that'll be our hypotenuse (cosine) and our adjacent (tan). We already know the opposite of the triangle (14ft) so we won't be using sine for this problem.
