- Hello!! My name is Kai and I would like to talk to you about the enzyme I choose.
- The enzyme I choose is called Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase. For the sake of time and sake of space in this textbox we will call it Rubisco.
- Rubisco is found in plants and some fungi. It helps with the process of photosynthesis. It helps convert water, CO2, and sunlight into energy abundant molecules like glucose. Think of this enzyme as a high-powered car. The more energy it gets (for the enzyme CO2,water, and sunlight,) the better it preforms (higher speeds for the car and more glucose for the cell.)
- Rubisco is a great enzyme that holds the potential for saving our planet. I would as a future protein engineer make some modifications that would greatly help the plants and our planet. One improvement being the ability to function in any climate. With the unpredictable seasons changing rapidly with climate change, crops are dying quicker and we aren't able to provide enough food for the population. With this enzyme being able to function in any climate the plant can easily function now with an energy supply to get working.
- Another improvement to the enzyme would be to make it be able to consume a larger amount of CO2. This way we can easily help reduce carbon emissions and start to reverse the horrible effects of climate change.
