  • In the early 1960's, it was a time of racial turmoil and violence.
  • Blacks could not have the same opportunities and nessecities as whites.
  • BLACKS ONLY
  • VOTING COMPLEX
  • WHITES ONLY
  • Blacks were deprived of any privileges and segregated in every way of life...including buses.
  • Fine with me.
  • It's not fair.
  • Hi, I'm John Lewis, and that brave group of young civil right activist were known as the Freedom Riders.
  • But their was one group of young people whowere not gonna just sit there in silence. Our dear friend John Lewis would like to tell us.
  • Hello.
  • I was part of the 13 members who formed in 1961 under the Congress of Racial Equality.
  • We did lunch sit-ins and bathrooms protests to challenge segregationist ideas.
  • WHAT!!
  • WHITES ONLYRESTROOM
  • What do you think you colored lovers are doing??
  • We challenged the Supreme Court ruling of Morgan vs. Virginia, which declared segregation as legal in transportation.
  • In the spring of 1961, we sought to challenge Boynton v. Virginia decision on segregation of buses.
  • Here we go. Our freedom ride to seek justice.
  • May 4, 1961, the 13 Freedom Riders got on the Greyhound to arrive in New Orleans on May 17.
  • They wanted to arrive in New Orleans to honor the anniversary of Browns v. Board of Education ruling segregation of schools unconstitutional.
  • They drove through Virginia and North Carolina until their first attack from Rock Hill, North Carolina.
  • On May 12 in Rock Hill, North Carolina, John Lewis and two others were attacked at a whites-only waiting area.
  • Once they reached Atlanta, Georgia after the incident, some got on a different bus at Trailway.

  • John Lewis himself would like to finish off the story of what happened.
  • On May 14, 1961, the Greyhound was the first to arrive in Anniston, Alabama with 200 angry whites behind them.

  • Because of the bus not stopping due to the mob, the tires blew out and the whites begin attacking the bus.
  • Get out of here. Blacks and whites don't belong together!
  • I was on the bus to Anniston, Alabama alright and I heard a crash and a shatter of glass.
  • WHAT IN THE WORLD OF SWEET ALABAMA IS THIS?!
  • A bomb was thrown in causing the bus to go up into flames with the Freedom Riders escaping.
  • The riders were beaten by the mob. I was hit in the head by a wooden crate. I went unconscious.
  • After I woke up with an aching headache, wanting to know what happened to my fellow riders.
  • Their all ok, but their hopes are down and some are saying they might quit.
  • I've learned that the Birmingham Public Commissioner, Bull Connor, knew we were coming and didn't even send policemen.
  • Many of the Freedom Riders were alive besides being bruised and battered.
  • Robert F. Kennedy start negotiating with John Patterson, the governor of Alabama to offer security and protection for the Freedom Riders.
  • But of course, he was liar. As soon as my crew mad it to Montgomery, Alabama, the angry white mob attacked yet again.
  • Robert F. Kennedy sent 600 federal marshals himself to deescalate the violence.
  • At this point, Kennedy ordered his troop to use tear against the mob to disperse them. That's when Patterson sends the National Guard.
  • Even though we experienced violence, we went all the way to Jackson, Mississippi on May 24.
  • When getting there, the F.R. were going to use the all white facilities, but got caught and sent to a penitentiary.
  • Due to this, Kennedy wanted to start a "Cooling Off period. He wanted our Freedom Riders to take a break to decrease violence.
  • When John Lewis and others went to the Mississippi court hearings, the judges ignored their defense
  • You broke OUR LAW. I'm not going to listen to this anymore.
  • The Freedom Riders were sentenced to 30 days in jail.
  • WHITES ONLY
  • Hate to tell you this, but...
  • Segregation in public facilities and transportation is against the Constitution!!
  • The arrests and violence were not all done in vain during the 1960's as the F.R. spoke out against segregation.
  • FREEDOM RIDERS RAISE RACIAL UPROAR IN ALABAMA
  • Due to pressure and outcries, John F. Kennedy passed the Interstate Commerce Commission.
  • I have the solution that you have been waiting for considering your civil liberties...
  • The Interstate Commerce Commission made segregation illegal on interstate transit terminals.
  • PRESIDENT JFK PASSES ICC ACT: SEGREGATION IS NOW MADE ILLEGAL ON BUSES
  • That is why we can now sit in the front or back of the buses as we please regardless of color.
