When the witches prophesied that Banquo's family will take the throne, Macbeth calls upon two murders to rid Banquo and his son, Fleance, to ensure that this will not happen.

Before Lady Macbeth can express her discontent, Macbeth urges her to be kind to Banquo as the murders did not execute the plan correctly. Macbeth is still optimistic about ridding Banquo and Fleance.

Fly, good Fleance fly, fly, fly!
The murders, joined by a third, almost complete the job. Banquo is dead, but his son has escaped.

Banquo?! Impossible!
As Macbeth welcomes his guests, he is greeted by the ghost of Banquo and also realizes that Fleance is still alive.

Scene V
Hectate scolds the three witches that prophesied Banquo's taking of the thrown for speaking with Macbeth. Hectate plans on creating confusion and paranoia for Macbeth.

Scene VI
Lennox walks with another lord and they discuss their suspicions of Macbeth despite Banquo's murder being blamed on Fleance. Both lords are hopeful King Edward will sent aid to Scotland.
