Once upon a time there were two lovers. Papatuanuku and Ranginui. They lived alone in a world of darkness. But they had each other
Over time Papatuanuku and Ranginui had many children. All males. All Gods. But they knew that for their children to reach their full potential, Ranginui and Papatuanuku needed to part.
All eager to prove their strengths, the brothers fought over who would separate their parents. Eventually it came down to Tane Mahuta and Tawhirimatea.
After Papatuanuku became the earth, and Ranginui the sky, all of their sons took their rightful place on earth. All but one...
After the attack, Tangaroa, another of Papatuanuku and Ranginui children, stood up for Tane Mahuta, saying he had done nothing wrong. Still in a rage, Tāwhirimātea attacked him too, forcing him into the ocean
At first, Tangaroa was sad, but quickly realized that he loved the sea, and so he became the Great Tangaroa, God Of The Sea's.
