  • First Nation's Life Before European Arrival
  • The First Contact Between Europeans and Native Americans
  • What kind of creatures are these? They're quite different, aren't they?
  • What exactly are they doing in this location? They have no resemblance to either animals or humans.
  • Gentlemen, put your hands on the deck. We're almost to the finish line.
  • The Fur Trade in France
  • Greetings! Do you want to make a deal?
  • Amuj (yes)
  • The lives of the First Nations was varied. People from the First Nations have lived in every province of Canada today. They did, however, share some fundamental values, such as the fact that individuals are not separate from nature or the non-living world. The Elders' knowledge and experience are highly regarded. All members of the community should respect elders. The Wendat, Haudenosaunee, and Mik'maq are only a few of the groups.
  • Fur trade in England
  • New metal goods from Europe. Yes! We should trade, but coming to York Factory is hard because we live way in the West.
  • We will offer you a gun if you get us 14 beaver pelts.
  • In the year 1000, Vikings were the first Europeans to visit North America. The following Europeans arrived 500 years later. The first contacts were made with people who lived near or on the coast. Both First Nations and Europeans were taken aback when they met people who appeared to be so dissimilar to them. They were also ethnocentric, believing that their way of doing things was superior.
  • The Nor' Westers are a tough competitor.
  • We are the Hudson Bay, this is our fur, or we'll shoot you.
  • Now I wear moccasins, use First Nation medications and way of hunting.
  • In the mid-1500s, France entered the race to find an ocean passage to Asia. Many explorers explored North America, including Henry Kelsey and Anthony Henday. They met the First Nations and began trading. The French desired beaver fur, whereas the First Nations desired European goods. The courier de bois explored more of Canada as the trade expanded. The French were also eager to establish a colony in North America. New France was the first French settlement. The increasing profits in the fur trade aided the growth of other sectors of the colony's economy.
  • The Fur Trade's Effects
  • I now have advanced European technologies like guns and other weapons used for hunting.
  • After witnessing other imperial countries succeed, Britain decided to join the race. The English, unlike the French, had no desire to establish a colony in what is now Canada. The privately held Hudson's Bay Company received a licence from the English king in 1670 to regulate the fur trade (HBC). It was just interested in one thing: making money. The English fur traders and the First Nations trappers' relationship was harmed as a result.
  • We are making so much money buy selling the fur to the hat makers in Europe.
  • When Britain took control of New France in 1760, the competition came to an abrupt halt. The French trade was terminated. The North West Company was founded in 1779 by a group of new Montreal traders. The company's goal, like the HBC's, was now to make money rather than to build a colony. They were both willing to pay more for furs. As they competed for the most furs, some rival traders got into fist fights. Some traders bullied the trappers in order to obtain their furs. Some people began to trade alcohol for furs as well. The First Nations trappers' relationship with rival traders deteriorated rapidly.
  • This is our fur we will offer you a higher price. Hudson Bay Company go away.
  • Intercultural encounters were not always pleasant. European governments eventually claimed sovereignty over First Nations lands. The First Nations, on the other hand, have had a long history of suffering. Their ancient ways of life were turned upside down when they met Europeans. Before the arrival of the Europeans, smallpox, measles, and influenza were not present in North America. They had no protection from the First Nations. The formation of a new culture, the Métis, was one beneficial outcome of contact between First Nations peoples and Europeans. Métis were born to First Nations women and European fur traders.
  • Gwe’! I am a Métis.
