  • Professor Daniel Kleitman
  • Hi, I'm Stephen Atschul! I have two degrees in mathematics: an A.B., which I received from Harvard College in 1979, and a Ph.D. that I earned under the supervision of my professors Daniel Kleitman and Bruce Erickson at M.I.T. in 1987.
  • Professor Bruce Erickson
  • After working with Dr. David Lipman at NIDDK in 1987, I followed him to National Center for Biotechnology Information at the U.S. National Library of Medicine two years later. There, I filled the roles of Staff Fellow, Senior Staff Fellow, as well as Senior Investigator, which is my role today.
  • Hi, I'm biologist Dr. David Lipman. From 1989 to 2017, I was the Director of the NCBI at NLM.
  • NCBI - NLM
  • I do research to develop algorithms and measures that can be used to compare and analyze DNA and proteins. I've also contributed to the development of the Multiple Sequence Alignment program, the MACAW and Gibbs sampling programs for local multiple alignment, and the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool, better known as BLAST, programs for database similarity search.
  • Additionally, I've played a role in developing the statistical theory for ungapped local alignments, the assessment of multiple distinct alignments, as well as means of estimating statistical parameters for gapped alignments.
  • My main focus in my research overall is to create measures to compare DNA/RNA sequences, and this is what I'm best known for: BLAST! One of its uses is that it allows you to identify unknown bacteria by comparing its RNA sequences to those of known bacteria.
  • Most recently, though, I've been tackling various theoretical and practical issues originating from the Dirichlet mixture model, which involves positional amino acid frequencies in the context of groups of related proteins.
