- Ligeia is considered a Romantic text because Poe rejects society's idea of beauty by pointing out his wife's flaws and features. The story is an emphasis on HIS idea of an aesthetic beauty.
- I see. Basically, he is not accepting of society's beauty standards. Another Romantic characteristic in Ligeia is the dark and mysterious nature of the setting.
- How upsetting is the ending, right? This couple struggled for ten years to pay for a necklace that turned out to originally be a fake. Had Madame Loisel stuck to her ordinary life, she would not have gon through such hardships.
- The Necklace is considered a Realist short story because it has characters that go through a complex and real life scenario. Madame Loisel desires a luxurious life while her husband prefers to settle for an ordinary life.
- Although Leigeia is a Romantic text, it could also be seen as a Realist text because of it's characteristic of having characters in a complex situation that involves ordinary animals (parts of nature) we would see in real life.
- I can see that. I would counter argue that The Necklace can also be seen as a Romantic text because of it's characteristic of having the couple go through intense emotions like guilt and humiliation.
