  • King Minos of Crete was a powerful man, feared by the rulers around him. And in his palace he had a labyrinth and in it he kept a beast, who loved the flesh of humans.
  • The Minotaur. The Minotaur was a half human half bull and stood two humans tall. As for Athens, King Minos decided that every year they must send seven young men and seven young women to be fed to the Minotaur.
  • Why do we send these people we send every year never return? Theseus asked his father King of Athens Becasuse they don't get sent to crete to be slaves. They are sent as food for the Minotaur, said King Aegeus. Father this is terrible. I am going to go the next time we send people over there and I am going to kill the Minotaur.
  • Everyone landed ashore and met with King Minos. He loved the chance to taunt the Athenians. This is all Athens has to offer me this year, ha! Such puny creatures. Anyway who's going to go first? asked King Minos. Theseus stepped forward I will go into the labyrinth first, said Theseus.
  • But just as Theseus was about to go in Ariadne King Minos's daughter gave Theseus a ball of yarn so that when he killed the beast he could find his way out. So Theseus took the ball of string and wandered in the labyrinth until he found the Minotaur. He fought the beast and lasted quite a while but he eventually killed it and followed the string out.
  • Once Theseus followed the string out of the labyrinth Ariadne told him to take her back to Athens and marry her. But Theseus did not actually find her attractive so he sent her off to get fruit and bread on an island on the way back and as soon as she was gone he quickly set sail to get away from the island and left her there.
