  • "Right as we get off the freeway, we're met by a police roadblock. Only one lane of traffic isn't blocked by a patrol car, and officers talk to drivers before letting them pass through. Suddenly it's as if someone grabbed my heart and twisted it. "Can we—" I swallow. "Can we get around them?(10.3) " This peice of text shows how much affected Starr is from Khalil's accident. She has such a bad flashabck about the cop that she is so nervours to even get on the freeway
  • " "justice for Khalil," the others chant. "justice for Khalil." Mr. Warren tells them to stop, but they get louder and pound their fists on the desks. I wanna puke and scream and cry (11.28-30)."This piece of text shows how uncomfortable Starr feels in a "white" school, and how she has to act to not bring attention to the fact that she knew Khalil. For her, living in a black community and going to a mostly white school brings up many problems.
  • " "That's the so-called gun," Ms. Ofrah explains. "Officer Cruise claims he saw it in the car door, and he assumed Khalil was reaching for it. The handle was thick enough, black enough, for him to assume it was a gun." "And Khalil was black enough," Daddy adds. A hairbrush. Khalil died over a f****** gun. (12.184-185)"The quote above from chapter 12 represents the police brutality khalil and Starr faced. The fact that Khalil died from touching his hairbrush is unreasonable and unfair. I believe that Starr will get justice for Khalil.
