As conflict between the plantation owners and free people of colored continued, the slaves started a revolt and Toussaint L'Overture joined as a general.
Toussaint becomes the leader of the slave revolt in 1798. This is when he becomes known as Toussaint L'Overture. He gives his famous speech during a storm.
Toussaint successfully defends against invading Spanish, French and British armies, with the hep of yellow fever. He also helps France eject Britain and Spain from the colony.

Napoleon invites Toussaint to France to work out a peace treaty. Instead, Napoleon breaks his promise and imprisons Toussaint. Toussaint dies month later in prison to to lack of of nourishment.
