- Maya is introduced and her family they came from Kazakstan. Maya for a while has been trying to ask her parents to let her go to a school dance but is too scared to bring it up to them because she is scared of what they will tell her.one day she was sitting in class when Mr.walsh called Maya into his office. She was told that her little brother Nurzhan had been in a fight and they couldn't contact her parents. She called her father to come to the school. After her father arrived to the school she lied and downplayed the situation to avoid Nurzhan from getting in serious trouble. A few days later Maya is was caught in the arms of an American boy named Daniel. Her parents were extremly mad at her for weeks after.

- One day when Maya comes home she finds her mom hurt on the bed. Sheasks her mother what happend to which her mother replies that she got injered at work. Maya's mom then says that she will have t take over her jobs for a while. To which Maya aggres to do in the meanwhile her mother heals. Maya tries really hard to keep up with everything like her mother's job but can't seem to.
- Falling action/ resolution
- After Maya started working she was exhasted doing her mom's job, school, and making dinner when getting home. She was too tried to the point where one day she cut her finger peeling potatos. Her parents relize that they are putting too much pressure and hard work on her. They decide to be less harsh with her.One day her brother finds the permission slip to the school dance. He convinces his parents to let her go to the school dance but only is she goes wiht her brother. So so does and when she gets there she sees daniel and dances with him. When the dance is over and she is back at home she relized how much her brother had changed.
