- Patina felt happier on the track rather than at school so instead of sitting down to eat during lunch, she ran around the cafeteria.
- "There was never enough seats, which was okay, because I never sat down anyway. I would basically just do a few laps around the room."
- Patina wanted to run away from her problems. A lot of bad things happened in her life and to make up for it all she wanted to do was run and win.
- What are you doing? How come you're not sitting?
- "See I try to be nice to the new girl but she always correcting me. And being all goody goody, like she think she better than us."
- Patina had a hard time fitting in with her track team and getting along with them. She was running for herself not the team.
- "I don't think I'm better than y'all. I think I'm better than you. I Just am. You run like your feet made of oatmeal. I'm faster because I work harder."
- Her Ma believes in her though. She always says "Patty ain't no junk."
- Patina had to take on a lot of responsibility starting a while ago when her moms legs were amputated like taking care of her little sister Maddy. Things were stressful and she had hard time asking for help.
