- Italians looked on life in Ancient Greece and Rome as a high point in civilisation that had good government and learning. This was in contrast to the Middle ages that they believed were barbaric and Gothic. Renaissance scholars added knew knowledge and it is believed that this was the start of the modern world. This makes the Renaissance historically significant.
- The Renaissance was the rebirth or revival of interest in the learning of ancient Greece and Rome. It began in Italy in the 14th century and spread to other countries in Europe, eventually ending in the 16th century.
