- It was another day in Mrs. Frizzle's class and all children were getting ready for their next adventure. Mrs. Frizzle entered and said that today there were learning about the cell cycle. The first stage is Interphase. "This is where the cell acts normal and does normal cell things. This is the longest stage of the cycle"
- "If it is the longest stage then when does mitosis start?" Mrs. Frizzle says "During the end of a cell's life, it starts mitosis. Before it can begin though, it has to duplicate its strings of DNA called cromatin so when it reproduces its pretty similar to the OG cell" "SO what happens when it is ready to duplicate?"
- Mrs. Frizzle says "First, the strings of duplicated chromatin condense and the newly formed shape is called chromosomes. These chromosomes then go to opposite sides of the cell. The nucleus also proceeds to disintegrate. All of this is part of the first stage called prophase."
- "We already know the first stage?! How many stages are there." "Oh, there's only 4." "4?! How will we ever remember all of these stages??""You could use the acronym 'PMAP'. You already know what the P stands for."Everyone says "PROPHASE" "Correct now let's move on to the next phase. This one is called Metaphase. I like to remember this as M for Middle. because those chromosomes are now moving in a straight line at the middle of the cell.
- "OOO what happens next" "I'm glad you asked. Next, the 2 sides of the chromosome (sister chromatid) split apart and go to opposite sides of the cell. This phase is called the Anaphase. You can remember it as A for Away where the 2 sister chromatids are going away from each other.
- "The next phase is called telophase. During this phase, the 2 sister chromatids get nuclei. Then, the still condensed chromosomes uncoil to make chromatin again." The kids sigh thinking their adventure is over since PMAT was over but they were in for a surprise.
