- The three witches recite to Macbeth his prophecy and Banquo asks what his his: he will be the father of future kings and he will be less happier but far happier than Macbeth.

- Lady Macbeth wishes that Macbeth would kill Duncan so he becomes king. Macbeth is worried at first but then reassured by Lady Macbeth. His main reason for killing is ambition.
- Fine, I will kill Duncan and become king!
- I want you to kill Duncan to become king, but I believe you are too kind
- I have a foolproof plan so that we don't get caught

- Macbeth has killed Duncan and returns to Lady Macbeth. Once Lady Macbeth leaves, he hears knocking multiple times. When she returns they both go to wash the blood off their hands.
