- Throughout the novel, Maya is forced to decide between her family's traditions or her own choices. In order for her life to change for the better, she has to combat her parents' rigid ideas on how her life will play out. Therefore, the theme of the novel is "tradition vs. change".

- In this scene, Maya is at an Indian wedding contemplating the differences in her life as a Muslim child and the lives of her more Amercanilized peers. She wants to go to Morp (and prom) and chase her dreams of becoming a filmmaker. At the wedding, it dawns on her that her parents are going to force her into becoming a doctor and marrying a suitable Muslim man, as this is tradition. She mourns the fact that her friend has chosen to follow the mold of "perfect Indian daughter" and marries right out of college instead of continuing to rebel. The color differences between Maya and the rest of the wedding guests are used to signify the disconnect she feels from her traditionally Indian culture and peers.
- Thematic Solution
- In this scene, Maya is arguing with her parents about going to NYU. They want her to attend the University of Chicago so she can remain close to them and pursue a degree in law or medicine, but she is desperate to push through the "mold" and chase her own dreams. Her parents are fighting for Maya to follow tradition, but she is on the side of change and growth. Tensions are high, yet both parties are so unwilling to relent that it tears the family apart.
- In this scene, Maya's parents are standing in front of the Statue of Liberty. This symbolizes the freedom and changes they are experiencing by moving to America. Both of her parents decided to go against their own families and beliefs so they could move to America and live their own lives. This shows how the Aziz family decide that changing was more beneficial to them than following tradition, a privilege they would not allow their daughter to have.
- In the end, Maya finds a happy balance between change and tradition. She attends NYU, but she also connects with her family and celebrates her culture. She forges connections with various people, groups, and places that have roots in her culture. She also becomes willing to compromise with her family while still maintaining the identity she fought hard to earn. All in all, Maya demonstrates the perfect equilibrium between change and tradition.
