- The Cuban War of Independence was the last of 3 liberation wars that Cuba fought against Spain. Fought from 1895-1898 and led by leaders Gomez, Garcia, and Marti, the war involvedbrutal tactics and guerrilla warfare. The war resulted in Cuba gaining independence from Spain and the U.S. gaining control over Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.

The U.S. sought to acquire territories and establish political and economic dominance in various regions. One example would be after the Spanish American-War, the U.S. acquired the Philippines, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

- The USS Maine was sunk in Havana Harbor in 1898, killing 266 men. At the time, it was believed that the explosion was caused by an external mine. This event escalated tensions between the United States and Spain, ultimately leading to the Spanish-American War.
