- When Fallon is 16 years old, she is severely burned in a house fire. The cause was stated to be accidental, but that changes throughout the book. Fallon burns thirty percent of her body, and in turn her acting career goes out the window.
- Fallon's father, who forgot about her in the house fire, announces that he and his girlfriend are expecting a baby. Fallon could not be more upset, as she views her father as an irresponsible and egotistical man.
- Fallon is very insecure about her body because of her burns. But when she meets Ben, a compassionate and funny writer, he shows her that her body is more than her scars. She learns to accept and be confident in her body and be grateful that she is alive.
- However, when Kyle, Ben's brother, finds out that he is dating Fallon, things take a turn for the worse. Kyle punches Ben and maes the reader question if Ben is really telling the truth.
- When Fallon finds Ben's manuscript that is based on their lives, the reader uncovers the truth along with Fallon. We find out that Ben is actually the one who caused the house fire all those years ago. Fallon could not be more heartbroken, as she realizes that Ben was lying to her face for years on end. It turns out the only thing he ever lied to her about, was the cause of the fire. But as Fallon reads the Manuscript more and more, she finds out that Ben had a traumatic childhood, and that he never meant to set the house on fire, but after his mother died he felt it was the only logical compensation.
- Just when fallon feels as though she can never look at Ben again, she finds a letter written by him to her inside the manuscript. What she finds out in those two pages, completely alters her perspective of Ben.
