  • The mere thought of singing in front of a crowd makes my stomach twist in knots.
  • "You should totally sign up for a solo..."
  • "Change your name?"
  • "We moved from Korea when I was four, we aren't american citizens yet. But we are about to be, and i am going to change my name."
  • "There he is!"
  • Amina has a fear of singing in front of people. She has a great voice but is too scared to show people. Just the thought of it makes her sick Amina doesn't know how to get over her fear, but Soojin wants to help her. Soojin is the only person in the school that knows that Amina can sing, and can sing well. Amina doesn't want people to know who she really is. But her singing can bring people together in a way she never thought she could.
  • Is Thaya Jaan right? Am I doing something wrong
  • "All this music all the time. You shouldn't let Amina do so much singing and piano."
  • At lunch Amina best friend Soojin is talking to her about changing her name. Soojin and her family are soon becoming american citizens and Soojin wants to change her name to be more American. But Amina doesn't think that's a good idea. Amina feels like her bestfriend is trying too hard to be a American girl and is forgetting who she is. Soojin wants to change who she is, but Amina doesn't want her bestfreind to change, especially her name.
  • "Someone broke into the Islamic Center and did some damage. Imam Malik called and asked for Baba to come right away."
  • "Did anyone get hurt?:"
  • Amina's uncle arrives from Pakistan. Amina and her family come to pick him up at the airport and Amina realizes she was worried for nothing. Amina's uncle Thaya Jaan comes to the US and stays at Amina's house. He aspires for Amina and her brother Mustafa to be perfect and to always speak Urdu. This makes a lot of changes for Amina. Thaya Jaan ends up making comments that make Amina think differently of him and her self.
  • "I was born by the river in a little tent, and just like that river I have been running ever since.” “It's been a long times, a long time running"
  • Thaya Jaan doesn't think Amina should be singing and be playing so much piano. He thinks it takes away from the time she should be practicing Urdu. He says that it is forrbidden in Islam and that it has no benefit for Amina. Amina over hears this converstaion with her dad and her uncle. This makes Amina feel like she is doing something wrong and that makes her never want to show anyone her singing after her uncle just said that she shouldn't.
  • The Islamic Center got caught on fire. Baba, Amina's father got a call in the middle of the night notifying him that damage was done. Amina heard her father leaving and was concerned so she got up and when to get parents room. She saw her mom sitting on the edge of her bed. Her mom explained what happened and Amina got really worried if someone got hurt. The Islamic Center is a place where her and her brother go to learn Urdu and more about her cuture. Her dad as one of the leaders there and helped build it. This scene showed the discrimanaton against Aminas culture and ho it affected her and her community.
  • During the carnival after the Urdu competion Amina finally builds up the courage to front of everyone. She really showed everyone ho she really is. and her great talent. It made everyone so happy to see her come out of her shell. After all that was said Amina found her voice, and when she did it she brought everyone together in a way she never thought she could.
