Ghost by Jason Reynolds is a fictional novel set in a modern day city and follows the life of 7th grader, Castle “Ghost” Cranshaw as he struggles to overcome a difficult childhood and find a new direction in life with the help of his mentor, Coach Brody.

Storyboard Description

An allusion is a reference to a well known work of art, literature, a person or an event. There are many allusions to modern day culture in the book, Ghost. This spider map illustrates 6 of them. There are many more! Students can enjoy searching for allusions as they read and use a spider map to identify, illustrate and add a caption explaining their significance in the story.

  • Castle enjoys reading the Guinness Book of World Records, which is a book published annually since 1955 that cites all the world records held in different achievements or extremes.
  • Castle is reading Lord of the Flies in English class. He admits it is a really good book. He compares the bully in his school, Brandon Simmons, to Jack, the bully in the book.
  • Castle's favorite basketball player is LeBron James and his poster hangs in his room. Castle argues that he is the best basketball player of all time. Initially he doesn't have any interest in running until Coach tells him that it will help him learn to dunk like LeBron.

  • MICHAEL JORDAN
  • Castle is studying about Alexander the Great, the Ancient Greek king who conquered the most territory. He finds social studies boring, but does admire that Alexander has "the Great" in his name.
  • Castle learns that Usain Bolt ran the 100m in 9.58 seconds. He thinks he can beat this but soon learns it's harder than it looks. Bolt has 8 gold medals from the Olympics and is the only sprinter to win Olympic 100m and 200m titles at three consecutive Olympics.
  • Michael Jordan is Coach Brody's favorite basketball player and he argues with Castle over who is better, Lebron James or Michael Jordan. Coach points out that Jordan has won six championships.
